It is no linguistic accident that “building”, “construction”, “work” designate both a process and its finished product. Without the meaning of the verb that of the noun remains blank.”
Sixteen IP Cameras are mounted throughout the DTS Project House property to capture the construction and site in real time and to help document the construction process. The cameras are mounted inside and outside the construction, are mounted at various heights, and are mounted to capture the streets and paths adjacent to the property. Along with a server and a App the cameras are part of a complete CCTV system.
The hillside site and project design stepping down the steep slope makes it impossible to effectively observe the construction from a single or even a few vantage points. The real time views from multiple cameras provide the ability to monitor the construction site and surrounding public streets which is invaluable in managing the construction process, helping with traffic control, and providing property security. The cameras also make it possible for the Owners, mills studio, consultants, and sub-contractors to remotely see the construction site in real time. This allows consultants and sub-contractors to remain up to date with the construction progress and view specific areas under discussion.
The cameras routinely capture the construction in still images from multiple perspectives. Each camera has its own programmed schedule for capturing the still images. Very importantly a screen shot can be made from the view of any camera at any point in time day or night to capture events of specific interest. The still images are being combined to create time lapse videos showing the construction from the various vantage points.
The construction CCTV system is programmed and monitored using the London based Benn Software’s Mac based app Security Spy. Security Spy is an iOS/tvOS app that allows easy monitoring of the cameras from anywhere from an iPhone, iPad and Apple TV, over a local network or the internet. Security Spy’s user interface provides the camera viewing experience as well as provides for programming how each camera captures images as well as providing security notifications. The use of Security Spy is a test for using the app in the finished DTS Project House.
What I try to do is the art of building, and the art of building is the art of construction; it is not only about forms and shapes and images.
